Aviano MHS Cadets Get Up-Close Look at F-16 Operations and Support Teams
AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy — Cadets from Aviano Middle High School’s AFJROTC unit, IT-951, spent Nov. 19 gaining hands-on experience with multiple units across the 31st Fighter Wing during an immersive career exploration event.
Upper-class cadets observed munitions loading on an F-16 before practicing how to operate the weapons loading vehicle. Under supervision, they also assisted in loading a bomb onto the aircraft, providing a rare chance to experience real-world maintenance operations up close.
The visit continued with a tour of the Operational Support Squadron, where cadets tested aircrew support systems and equipment, deepening their understanding of the diverse career fields that support daily flight operations.
Cadets participated in hands-on activities in the following areas:
- Aircrew Flight Equipment (AFE): Flight suit fitting and demonstrations of essential aircrew gear.
- Independent Duty Medical Technicians (IDMTs): Blood draw demonstrations and an overview of deployed and clinic-based medical operations.
- Operations Desk: Step brief procedures and radio call simulations.
- Pilot Experience: A “day in the life” look at pilot responsibilities and mission preparation.
- Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE): Demonstrations by SERE specialists showcasing survival skills and mission-readiness training.
Cadets said the experience helped clarify their goals and strengthen their interest in Air Force careers.
“Seeing a pilot in his working environment inspired me to work harder to achieve my goal of becoming a pilot,” said junior cadet Isabella P.
Junior cadet Charlie G. added, “The trips I’ve taken through JROTC helped me learn about career fields in the Air Force, which has pushed me to want to commission as an officer. I’m very grateful for the opportunities the base provided us.”
JROTC instructor SMSgt (Ret.) Kathleen Gonzales praised the support from the 31st Fighter Wing. “The cadets had an amazing time and were truly appreciative of the opportunity afforded to them by the members of the 31st Fighter Wing,” Gonzales said.
The visit provided AFJROTC cadets with real-world exposure to Air Force missions, reinforcing leadership development and inspiring the next generation of Airmen.
